Suicide under any circumstances is a grave sin in Islam. Martyrdom in Islam has a very vague context and applies most to the sick/terminally ill and those that die at the hands of their enemies in combat or as a result of combat or persecution.

They were known as followers of Judas of Galilee, and their goal was a simple one: incite rebellion against Rome. Sicarii, the pogroms against Greeks and Hellenized folks and the flipping out at the notion of any Greek temples in Jerusalem or their territory. Modern terrorism differs from ancient terrorism only in that they are non-state, non-military actors. Explosives and guns largely facilitate this shift. The only pre-modern non-state terrorist groups were the Jewish Sicarii (daggers) and Muslim Hashashin (assassins) who used public murders in crowded places as their primary tactic. Unlike modern terrorists, their primary goal was to frighten co-religionists to their side by targetting supposed collaborators/traitors.

The Hashashins though didn't solely rely on guerrilla warfare as the Sicarii did, the Hashashins were also very sectarian. That sort of warfare has existed since the dawn of time though; Europe has had its fill of that kind of politicking and warfare. I agree though in the respect that the hive mind aspect is a big factor. The Tamil Tigers were kind of the exception to those kind of tactics being religious (aside from the Japanese but the Emperor was a living God to them so they are zealotous attackers). Interesting that this kind of thinking at its core would be considered altruism (or brainwashing depending on how you look at it).
