Default Microsoft to kill off Internet Explorer after 25 years

    https://www.independent.co.uk/life-s...-a9678546.html

The Internet Explorer project was started in the summer of 1994, and by 2001 Microsoft had all-but-ubiquitous control. The extent of its dominance – inherently tied to the prominence of Windows XP - was so great that it commanded 90 percent of the market, and developers started coding entire websites around what Internet Explorer could or could not do.

As all empires eventually fall, Microsoft’s hegemony waned as it continually ignored web standards and continually missed updates, criticised as one of the “worst tech products of all time”.

Microsoft did not follow the guidelines set by the World Wide Web Consortium – the organisation that establishes standards for web technologies – and so Internet Explorer would often make web pages look different on its own browser than on others like Opera and Firefox.

Competitors arose. In 2004, the Mozilla foundation released the first Firefox browser, and in 2008 Google Chrome joined it. These companies were keen to move faster than Internet Explorer – something that was easy to achieve. New features were only added to Microsoft’s browser as a part of a major release, and it could take years for the company to update the browser.

In the decade since Google Chrome was launched, the search giant updated it 70 times. Microsoft, meanwhile, updated Internet Explorer only four times between its eighth iteration and its final, eleventh one.

Good. That browser was shit for a long time. I use Vivaldi and Yandex web browsers instead.

Microsoft Edge is decent. I don't use it though.

I was surprised to read that Internet Explorer was the most popular browser up until 2016, when it was finally surpassed by Google Chrome. I ditched it for Mozilla Firefox in 2007, perhaps even 2006.

There was a competitor to IE in the '90s named Netscape, which is used in the South Park movie f.e. It seems that it was an ancestor of Mozilla.

The worst web browser out there, not a huge loss.

Not a big deal to me. Internet Explorer is my least favorite browser out of all the browsers I've tried.

Brave is also a very good browser for me, but I find Vivaldi to be the most user friendly browser for me..not to mention that you can hibernate your tabs that is a built in feature among other things like customize your tabs and etc.

A lot of people, including myself, stopped using IE back in thr mid 00s because of the massive malwares and viruses you get from it.

Even back in the late 90s, I was using Netscape Navigator. When Firefox came out, I used it. Eventually went to Chrome and never looked back.

Internet Explorer only existed for so long because Microsoft insisted it be in every Windows computer.

Edge is ok, but it is too little, too late afaic.

Ironically enough, I am using Ad Blocker Browser on my phone while typing this. Got used to it after seeing so many ads in this forum. I know Loki nipped it in the bud but I still use it out of habit.

Also, little history here. Firefox was created by the same people that created Netscape, and was created after Netscape was bought by AOL.
