She is Austrian, the daughter of a diplomat and she has lived and worked for several years in the Middle East. She criticized, in 2009, during a conference, the condition of women in Arab-Muslim countries as well as the practice of jihad in Iran and Libya.
She was condemned in Austria because she said Muhammad was pedophile, and the judge found it's defamatory and insulting towards Islam.
You can have a look at articles in German. And it's just one example, but which reveals well that there's a real issue concerning the notion of insult/blaspheme against a religion. Once you start criminalising such notions, it's like Pandora's box...

You are correct with your assumptions on Protestantism in the United States.
I am Southern Baptist and I have switched around a few churches in my life and more or less they are all the same in the sense that they now have more of a non-denominational approach on the way they lead their service.
These days when I attend church it seems as if I am listening to some kind of motivational speaker.
Less emphasis on the Bible, the focus has shifted on how YOU can make YOUR life better, and how YOUR sins can go away as long as you take 5 minutes out of your day and pray.
It is sad and it almost makes sense as to why our population has such an entitled attitude toward life. You never hear pastors preaching about God coming first and the man providing for his wife and children, and the wife taking care of the children.. so forth... it is all personal teachings now and how God has created this world for each individual to pursue their dreams as long as they give thanks and pray daily. Gender roles are slowly dying out. It’s even happening in Church. I’d say Catholicism is still strict in that sense.. at least in my area. But not for Protestants by any means.
What’s done in darkness will come to light
