    (1) English as a 'neutral' language.
    (2) The language of the country in question.
    (3) Your own language, but spoken more slowly than usual.

Czechs and Slovaks understand each others without any problems. To others you have to speak English. Also you didn't answer my quote on other thread where you claimed something that I was against for lol, total nonsense and stupid. It's like saying I'm sick and you saying there are many sick people in the world?????????????

Poles generally would try using Polish (for some it would be easier) if they don't know Czech in Czech Republic, sometimes if you want be understood though English is necessary. Obviously if both sides know it.

Btw. I am a semi-fluent self taught Czech speaker myself.

Ukrainians have a decent grasp of Polish without learning it first.

As a Czech I speak in Czech to Slovaks, and they answers me in Slovak - no problem.
I am also able to speak in Slovak.
Speaking to Ukrainians - there are a lot of Ukrainians who works in our country and they understand Czech if they live here longer time.
Ca. 20 years ago I discussed with groups of Ukrainians working here, we spoke in Russian, together.
With Poles I usually speak in Czecho-Polish pidgin, influenced by Silesian dialects
