Maradona was more technical and despite being a coke head he was very influential. He won Mexico 86 alone, nearly won Italia 90 and won Serie A with Napoli (twice) in a time when every italian team was filled with superstars. Messi never left his confort zone and always played in one of the best teams in the world. Spain won a world cup and two euros with the Barcelona backbone.
Also players were less protected by referees when Maradona played. That's why Messi has hardly have any injuries.

He is 33, so i think we shouldn't expect too much from him. He could have left when he was younger.
I am of the opinion that players were more technical in the past and they are more athletic today. The standard is dropping in terms of ability.
Beckenbauer, Maradona or Pelé of course would be superstars today. They would just have to adapt to the physical training, other than that they certainly could play. You should watch some Pelé footage if you are questioning his physicality.
Btw, tennis i will go with Federer even if Nadal and Djokovic will also surpass his titles.

X2 Maradona > Messi
Until Schumacher's era, it was common to listen to people referring to someone who drove fast in the road as 'who does he think he is? Bloody Fangio???'. In fact, Alain Prost's wife once said that to his husband: 'Pour qui te prends tu? Fangio??' When he was already a F1 driver. Yfou can see this memoir in Fangio's biopic on Netflix.
