Default Croats in Argentina / Hrvati u Argentina

    Hrvati u Americi

    Chapter: Hrvati u Argentini

    Chapter: Croatas en Argentina

The most financially successful of all the Croats in Argentina was also almost the first to arrive: Nikola Mihanović came to Montevideo, Uruguay in 1867, and, having settled in Buenos Aires, Mihanović owned 350 vessels of one kind or another by 1909, including 82 steamers. By 1918, he employed 5,000 people, mostly from his native Dalmatia. Mihanović by himself was thus a major factor in building up a Croat community which remains primarily Dalmatian to this day.

The second wave of Croat immigration was far more numerous, totalling 15,000 by 1939. Mostly peasants, these immigrants fanned out to work the land in Buenos Aires Province, Santa Fe, Chaco, and Patagonia. This wave was accompanied by a numerous clergy to attend their spiritual needs, especially Franciscans.
If the first two waves had been primarily economic, the third wave after World War II was eminently political. Some 20,000 Croatian political refugees came to Argentina, and most became construction workers on Peron's public works projects until they started to pick up some Spanish. Argentina today has the third largest number of Croatian descendants in the world.

Juan Vucetich (Born July 20, 1858 Hvar, Croatia – Died january 25, 1925)
Dolores, Argentina was a Croatian-born Argentine anthropologist and police official who pioneered the use of fingerprinting.
Vucetich was born as Ivan Vučetić in Hvar in the Dalmatian region of Croatia then part of the Habsburg Monarchy. In 1882, he immigrated to Argentina.
In 1891 Vucetich began the first filing of fingerprints based on ideas of Francis Galton which he expanded significantly. He became the director of the Center for Dactyloscopy in Buenos Aires, Argentina. At the time, he included the Bertillon system alongside the fingerprint files.
In 1892 Vucetich made the first positive identification of a criminal in a case where Francisca Rojas had killed her two children and then cut her throat, trying to put the blame on the outside attacker. A bloody print identified her as the killer.

Diego Armando Maradona (born 30 October 1960) is an Argentine football manager and retired professional footballer. He is currently the coach of Argentine Primera División club Gimnasia de La Plata.[7] He is widely regarded as one of the greatest football players of all time. He was one of the two joint winners of the FIFA Player of the 20th Century award. Maradona's vision, passing, ball control and dribbling skills were combined with his small stature (1.65 m or 5 ft 5 in), which gave him a low center of gravity allowing him to maneuver better than most other football players; he would often dribble past multiple opposing players on a run. His presence and leadership on the field had a great effect on his team's general performance, while he would often be singled out by the opposition. In addition to his creative abilities, he also possessed an eye for goal and was known to be a free kick specialist. A precocious talent, Maradona was given the nickname "El Pibe de Oro" ("The Golden Boy"), a name that stuck with him throughout his career. His maternal grandmother, Salvadora Kariolić, was of Croatian descent.

Thanks for sharing! Majority of Croats in Americas are by origin from Adriatic Islands. Diego actually visited his grandmas village few years back, went to local church and wanted to find documents about his ancestors.
It's located in north Adriatic region.

    Darío Cvitanich

Darío Cvitanich (Croatian: Dario Cvitanić; born 16 May 1984) is an Argentine professional footballer who plays as a striker for Racing Club de Avellaneda.

    International career
Cvitanich was born in Argentina with distant Croatian heritage. He established himself as a quality footballer in his home country playing for Banfield in the Argentine Primera División. After much consideration he eventually pledged to play for the Croatia national team, stating that "such an opportunity only comes once and you must take it."[10] It became known on 14 January 2009 that he couldn't play for Croatia, because the FIFA rules do not allow nationality to be taken from great grandparents.[11]

    Personal lifet
Cvitanich obtained a Croatian passport in August 2008.[12] He has dual citizenship, holding both Argentinean and Croatian passports. The surname Cvitanić has his origin on the island of Brač. During the last century, every tenth citizen of the island was one of the family of the Cvitanić's.

    Sandra Mihanovich

    Biography
She was born in the Recoleta neighbourhood of Buenos Aires, Argentina, the daughter of Iván Mihanovich, a polo player of Croatian descent, and Mónica Cahen D'Anvers, a journalist and TV anchorperson. She inherited from her paternal grandfather her passion for jazz music. After completing high school (Northlands), she studied music at the Universidad Católica Argentina and, since March 1976, also theater at the Conservatorio de Arte Dramático. She is the niece of composer Sergio Mihanovich.[1]

Sandra Mihanovich (born April 24, 1957) is an Argentine singer, musician, and composer of Rock, Blues, and Tango rhythms.

Her singing début was at "La Ciudad" pub on May 20, 1976. While working the pub circuit, she met fellow musician and composers Alejandro Lerner, Marilina Ross, Celeste Carballo, Horacio Fontova and Ruben Rada, whose songs she went on to include in her repertoire. She met her first producer, Ricardo Kleinman, after a show at the Universidad de Belgrano. In October 1982, she became the first female soloist holding a show at Obras, widely known as the Argentine "Rock Cathedral". In 1986 she won the "Antorcha de Plata" at the Viña del Mar Song Festival in Chile.

The Legislative Chamber of Buenos Aires named her "Distinguished Personality of the Culture of the City" to honor her 30-year career. As an actress, she starred in the Vulnerables television series (1999), about a self-healing therapy group, and other movies and TV programs.

This was one of her best songs (well, I am not sure if sge composed that song but she used to play it. )

Mali gave Hrvatske na kraju svijeta / A little piece of Croatia at the End of the World

In a little piece of land, in the southernmost place in the world, this square was born to honor those Croatian pioneers who came to these places and contributed their claw and culture to forge what we are today.

This square is a way of recognizing and making visible your contribution to the community of our Patagonia.

The "Croatian Center of the end of the world" began in 2013 to manage a space to be able to locate the "Croatia square", so that the community of our city and its visitors, make visible the presence of the Croatian pioneers and their descendants . Mr. Federico Mustapic, as a member of the aforementioned center, also promoted said request from his radio space. And its result was reflected in Ordinance 4404/2013 and Municipal Decree 1453 that designated as PLAZA CROACIA the green space located: between Maipú and Prefectura Naval avenues, corner of Sarmiento.

Today, together with the Association of Croatians in Argentina based in Tierra del Fuego, Ms. Amanda Beban , a representative member of the same, took up the initiative and realized the long-awaited desire that had become lethargic in time.

Thus, during the month of June after the visit to our city, the Franciscan priest, writer, parish priest of the Croatian Catholic parish in Salzburg, Mr. Zlatko Spehar , I take the opportunity to bless this little corner destined for the Croatia Square, in memory of all those who inhabited this land, and their descendants who keep the flame burning of those who left their town back then, to be the people that we are.
