Yes I've heard about this theory. I think it's really true, the lightbulb manufacturers were (and in fact, they are even right now) forced to shorten the lifespan of their products. I think this happens simply because of the fact that they need generate more profit. Of course if lightbulbs would work for 50 years or even 100s of years, obviously no one would buy more than a couple of lightbulbs in their entire life. This is the sad (or funny) story behind it.
