I thought Latin was already a dead language by then.

Latin was the "official" language for the Catholic church and its liturgy at least till the second Vatican council in 1962-1965.

During that council,for example, all participants spoke in latin.

One of the main changes that followed that council was the widespread use of local languages in the mass instead of latin.

I don't get the question. Franks in the 12th and 13th century were not romance speakers?

My question is not just about personnel, but how would you better describe the Crusades as a whole, in terms of personnel, culture, spirit, organisation, politics etc; sprung from the Frankish Barbarian world or from the (post)Roman/Latin world? I guess this could also be a question relevant to France and much of Medieval Western Europe.

Most historians agree that medieval chivalric ideals developed from Germanic warrior ethos. Christianity at this time was still highly syncretic

Also the term Latin was used for all Roman Catholic Christians, it had no ethnic context in the early crusades
