What is going on with Cieszyn Vlachs? What makes them Vlach?

Vlach comes from Greek Vlachi Βληχεί which is a doric homeric word and it means to graze pasture. The Romans loaned the word and spread it to the rest of Europe. Thus the Germans called some Latin-speaking people Valah or Wallach. The term used medieval Latin was Blachi. The word is related to others that refer to Latin or Celtic speakers who were initially Shepherds, like the Walloons of Belgium, Welsh in English, Wloch in Polish, Olasz in Hungarian, Volokh in Russian..

Vlachs are local latinized shepherds. In Greece there was a province called great Vlachia where the people were mainly Spepherds. Romania was under the strong influence of Fanatiote Greeks and there were many Greek Vlachs who travelled to Romania as it was a Greek cultural centre. Many of those Greek Vlachs returned back and became great benefactors of Greece.
