I don't speak any of those two languages, but I would say that I more or less understand both of them about equal.

Written Portuguese is super close, Italian is not.

Today in the work a Portuguese came and he was speaking with us a few minutes. He spoke Spanish PERFECTLY and when I arrived he was talking about Gypsies with one of my cowrokers, saying they are scum and how he hates them etc. Then he started to criticize Chinese, saying some truths that made me cringe, about their hygiene etc. The three laughed a lot, it was nice, and I think his Portuguese accent in his perfect Spanish made possible that his talk was so familiar to me.

If I look at writing, I understand Portuguese more easily.
But, when I listen to the languages spoken, I find Italian considerably easier to understand for phonetic reasons.
