With a bit training and good will both are easily affordable.

Intelligible, you mean? The funny thing is that native speakers of both languages usually understand Spanish more easily than the other way round - I have seen plenty of Spanish tourists in both Portugal and Italy communicating with the locals in Spanish and being replied back in the local languages.

There are logical linguistic and phonetic reasons for that, it's not because portuguese speakers are good at languages and spanish aren't.

Because we have an Alpha language that as many people understand/speak we can travel everywhere without knowing more languages, yet we will "survive".
We went to Romania without knowing a single word in Romanian. Tons of Romanians spoke Spanish. There was zero problem there.

But your language is so fast and monotonic, man (and I'm not hating). No stresses. No melody. Just one long note or one word or sentence that's elongated, or a sound of a machine gun that's let loose. But this is a problem with many syllable timed languages. French is also like that, but it is slower. Portuguese has a melody, has stresses (on keywords) and it has pauses. We know what they mean even if you don't understand them. Spanish is just a nonstop, fast mile-a-minute language with no emphasis.

How Spanish sounds like to me:

    Lalalalallaaalalaaaalalalallalaalalalalalalllaala (faints from exhaustion)

    How Portuguese sounds:

Laaa la LA lala la la laaa La laa LA LA LA la laa la LA

My spanish is intermediate skill but I understand portuguese easier. But thats also because i took time to learn alittle bit of basic portuguese.
When I saw the connection between the languages and its mostly the same language it became easier to understand depending on the accent and dialect.
