A bit closer to french lexically, but when you add phonetics into the equation, spanish wins
catalan would closer to italian than both:

This chart seems kinda odd though, now that I'm paying more attention to it, how can French be as close to Romanian as it is to Spanish?
I bet Catalan is more similar to French than standard Italian is, too

A year ago I downloaded a phone app and learned a bit italian, but after two weeks i gave up studying. I know some words though. A few words. Maybe I should learn a bit spanish too. Spanish is largely spoken in the world, similar as english, by really many people.

Although maybe is only one issue of the two French who participate the most in this forum, which coincidentally are the two half Italians.

As a French, what do you opine about this?
I'm 25% Sardinians. Italians doesn't exist, genetically speaking (>>> genetic study), i'm not half sardinians, but one quart, means 25% (half is 50%).

This nonsensical map has been posted umpteen times to support the dubious theory of Italian having some alleged mutual intelligibility with French.

How can one take seriously figures claiming that French has a higher lexical similarity with German (0.29) than with English (0.27)?

Actually, I do remember there being certain words in German that are close to French that aren't in English, such as the words for 'cup of tea', 'town square' and 'estate agents'.

    Yep,
"une tasse de thé" / "eine Tasse Tee"
    "Place du Marché" / "Marktplatz"
    "agent immobilier" / "Immobilienmakler",

but those odd instances are poorly representative of the much lower share of French words in German.

I learned Italian for years and I understand far more Spanish than French. Both Italian and Spanish are easy languages to learn (Spanish being easier of the two) while French looks much harder.
To me French is very alien, I understand almost nothing, it doesn't seem to be true Romance language and it has very difficult and odd pronounciation.

Keep in mind I learned both Italian and Latin. If you speak standard Italian, Spanish will be easy to learn and you'll understand a lot almost instantly, with French not at all.

But didn't you learn much of your Spanish from all the PRs and Dominicans you met in NYC?
