No, there is not much if anything genuinely 'progressive' about postmodernism. Least of all the oft-repeated mantra from its proponents that race and gender are merely 'social constructs' rather than objective realities. (Hierarchy is most definitely NOT the same thing as difference per se). To the contrary - such beliefs are deeply regressive and anti-Enlightenment. The basic tenets of the Enlightenment, for all its flaws, nevertheless remain sound: (1) the world is external to the observer and (2) through inquiry, reason and science we could learn about both ourselves and other species. In its place, postmodernism claims that there are no external truths, that everything is subjective and everything is guided by a mixture of feelings and power relations. Time for a fightback against such thinking.
