I got into it after watching the 98 World Cup, that was when Brazil really had a reputation and the most famous/skilful players. Now they're just another big name.

Also if I'm not mistaken Germany have been more successful at continental level, dominating the European Championships, whereas the South American Championship was traditionally dominated by Argentina/Uruguay.

But Brazilian teams of 70s ohhh ))

    German football is overrated.
To think Cyuyff's Netherlands with all it's talent never took a title against them makes me sad.
What I find weird is Brazil doesn't do particularly good at Copa America
Seems like an obscure, weird tournament. Barely anyone watches it in my country. (the different time zone doesn't help probably)

Brazil. Germany may have more SF appearances(13 to Brazil's 11) but Brazil are the most successful WC winning team at the end of the day and are the only nation on the planet to have appeared in every single WC tournament from 1930 onward.

Copa is very underrated tournament. Lot of great teams - Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, Colombia, Paraguay...excellent team like Mexico was invited many times and never won it.
But I must admit I am biased in favor of South American football. I simply prefer it to European. Not club level, but NT level. Love their style.

I wouldn't say that they don't do particularly good at these tournaments considering that they have 9 titles. Uruguay and Argentina are definitely no slouches.

I'd argue Euro cup has more 'great teams'. Italy, Spain, France, Germany, England, Portugal, Belgium, Netherlands etc.

Nowadays Brazil is trash though, indeed. And like Creoda says it has been for a long time.
Downfall started at WC 2006 in Germany - for me last fantastic Brazilian team with pure talent which underarcheived.

European Championship is without any doubt strongest continental competition, and it isn't even close. But Copa America isn't second class tournament.
