On This Day (12 September) in 1916, the Serbian army began the offensive against the Bulgarians and Germans at Kaimakchalan in World War 1. The battle is remembered in the history by the large number of casualties suffered by the Serbian army and the altitude at which the battle was fought. Serbs called Kajmakchalan the Gate of freedom because there they stepped back into their country for the first time after the Albanian golgotha . The battle ended on 30 September 1916, and the victorious Serbian army managed to stop the Bulgarian offensive. At the same time, this was the first victory of the Serbian army after leaving the Serbian territory and the suffering during the retreat through the Albanian mountains. Today, there is a small memorial church (chapel) on the peak Prorok Ilija (Prophet Elijah) with the inscribed dedication of Aleksandar Karađorđević: "To my mighty heroes, fearless and faithful, who opened the door to freedom with their chests and remained here for eternity as guards at the threshold of the fatherland".

Be proud of your grandfather. Many of our grandfathers gave their lives in trenches on fronts in that time.

Well I must admit that French and Serbs fought valiantly.

When we lost Macedonian front everything else went to shit.

Our Empire was already in the state of shit, we were loosing battles everywhere so that even with Bulgarians and Germans we could not stop French, Serbs and Allies.

Zejtinlik, the Serbian military cemetery, is one of the holiest places for the Serbian people. Over 8,000 Serbian soldiers who died in the First World War fighting for freedom are buried there.
Over them, thousands of mounds of Serbian warriors, for half a century their guard Djordje Mihajlovic, the guard of Zejtinlik and the memory of the suffering of the Serbian army in the Great War, has been watching.
The last guard from the Mihajlović lineage, every morning before the sun, since 1960, wearing a military uniform, cleans the cemetery, opens the iron gate, lights candles and welcomes and sends off the descendants of warriors who stopped in eternal peace after the terrible Golgotha and the breakthrough of the Thessaloniki front.

If we held a minute of silence for all Serbs killed in the First World War, we would be silent for two years and 138 days.

On This Day (September 17) in 1918, after a three-day offensive, the First and Second Serbian Army broke the Salonika front. That moment was decisive for the collapse of the Central Powers in the First World War. Shortly thereafter, after only a month and a half, the Austro-Hungarian Empire capitulated, and so did Germany. Serbian forces broke the Bulgarian army and forced Bulgaria to lay down arms on September 30, 1918. Serbian armies were advancing so quickly that the French Command had to ask the Serbian Supreme Command to slow down the progression, as the French cavalry was unable to keep pace with the Serbian infantry. After the breakthrough of the Salonika front, the Serbian army liberated Serbia, and all the countries that were later incorporated into the new joint state - the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes.
