Vlachs is the common name of several separate Romance peoples, derived from the Romanized population of Southeastern, Central and Eastern Europe. The origin of the Vlachs is controversial, as is the hypothesis that all Wallachian groups have a common root. Vlachs are often assimilated into the communities in which they live or move from one community to another. Romanian culture was subjected to assimilation pressure by the Slavs and later by the Hungarians and Germans (mainly in Transylvania). In the 19th century, the influence of Western Europe, especially France, increased. Aromanian culture was strongly influenced by Byzantium and Greece. In a wide Balkan area during the Middle Ages, "Vlachs" meant a pastoral population practicing seasonal cattle breeding, regardless of their ethnicity.
“ ...Even if a man lives well, he dies and another one comes into existence. Let the one who comes later upon seeing this inscription remember the one who had made it. And the name is Omurtag, Kanasubigi. ”
