soviet union has bad conotations, east euro is lot more neutral. if you say soviet union people think chernobyl, vodka, poor, cold, commie blocks, siberian political prisoners, hookers
Soviet Union was demonized in media here and showed like a hell on earth. I have no idea how accurate is that entirely.

But now when you say east euro people will think place like poland or slovakia who really made great progress in living standard, but remained conservative and white.
this countries role models for most right wingers so east euro is not a negative term.
