Professor wants anti-racism policies for personal support workers

Sep 13, 2020

A Western University researcher who’s studied racism faced by personal support workers (PSWs) says Canada needs policies to curb rampant prejudice against the health-care system’s “backbone.”

Bharati Sethia, an associate professor of social work at King’s University College, said many PSWs experience systemic racism while doing a demanding job, a situation made more intolerable by COVID-19.

“Employers and supervisors in health-care facilities must commit to a call for action to address systemic racism through anti-racist policies and make their workplace carer-friendly for all their carer employees,” she wrote in an article published this week in the Conversation, a network of not-for-profit media outlets that publish columns by academics and researchers.
