I have to object the idea that Norwegians and Swedes were only farmers and had only a few Vikings. I have seen that linguists, archaeologists and geneticists have a very different views about history, often "politically" driven. Archaeological evidences about Swedish and Norwegian Vikings, no matter how they are called, are undisputable. For instance found Viking swords in Norway and Sweden exceed what has been found in Denmark.

Viking was a trade/action, Viking swords were just Scandinavian swords. There are only a few instances of government backed Viking raids such as the Great Viking Army.

It is irritating that the media choose to emphasise the outliers - it is hardly surprising that some of the vikings were a lot more diverse due to the very nature of what they did.

It is interesting info but the way certain elements will treat this hugely irritating - like how they reported cheddar man, floodgates could open for mena and SSA vikings in TV, they need the briefest of excuses..

True, the whole Scandinavia was ruled by petty kings, or should I say chiefs. Everyone know this, so mock the study. But the study speaks about Denmark, Sweden and Norway and I meant to point geographic areas.

All I want to see is the ancient samples from the study, and a more detailed analysis of the genetic impact of Vikings/ancient Scandinavians across Europe.

How can you infer the proportion of vikings to farmers using genetic analysis?

It is commonly believed that the westward migrations and raids were mainly carried out by people from what are now Norway and Denmark in the 9th and 10th centuries CE. In contrast to western movements, eastward expansions are commonly believed to have been carried out by Swedish Vikings, trading along navigable river systems and overland caravan routes32. Swedish Vikings (the ‘Rus’) are also credited for being active in the formation of the first Russian state33,34. Overall, our fine-scale ancestry analysis based on genomic data largely support the Viking expansion patterns inferred from archaeology (Figs. 3, 4 and S11.12). The eastward movements mainly involved individuals with Swedish-like ancestry, while the Viking individuals with Norwegian-like ancestry travelled to Iceland, Greenland, Ireland and the Isle of Man. A Danish-like ancestry component is more pronounced in present-day England, which is also in accordance with historical records35 and still visible in place-names34, and modern genetics36,37. Importantly, however, it is currently impossible for us to distinguish Danish-like ancestry in the British Isles from that of the Angles and Saxons, who migrated in the 5th-to-6th centuries CE from Jutland and Northern Germany.

That they chose ugly/dysgenic looking people to represent "meds" is rather relevant.

Farmers had different genes. The inland population of Sweden and Norway barely changed genetically in thousands of years and was distinct from that of the Viking coastal settlements.
