1- A religion is only about individuals himself, cannot be generalized for geography. Therefore Balkans or any other region cannot be defined with a religion.
2- The core factor which makes Balkans turn into its modern shape is Bogomilism. Not any of modern religions. Nevertheless, all the mentioned religions are present now and functioned in different ways throughout history. Some influenced less and some more, but all had a role.

Specifically to the question. Orthodoxy and Bulgaria. Orthodoxy as the main religion, and Bulgaria as a conductor of this religion for all Balkan early medieval states, as well as for most of the Slavic states. Imagine what would have happened if Bulgaria had accepted Catholicism! What would be the fate of the Balkans? Would it be conquered by the Ottomans? Would Russia be the largest Orthodox country today? Would Europe be the same as we know it today ?! My answer is "No"

Orthodoxy. It is the only religious sect of the given options that sprout in the Balkans.

Interesting chain of thought. Bulgaria WAS catholic for like 30ty smth years in 13th century, but I guess it was in name only. But I dare say that if the Balkans were catholic we wouldnt have fallen under the Turks or they would have been trown out much earlier. A catholic/protestant Russia would have been a sight to see... A bigger Sweden perhaps???

[/ QUOTE]

Namely, I also think that most likely the conquest of the Balkans by the Ottomans would not have happened, and in relation to Russia there was very likely not Catholicism, but Islam had become the main religion . In such a scenario, Europe would be a very interesting place today
