According to the statistics it does not grow, it is the opposite.

ive seen otherwise, and there is a good amount of cool irish language media and songs, not like corny "riverdance" type stuff.

ive met people from ireland my age who are decent at it, and theyre just average university educated people.



the census forms and land allotment forms from the 1800s in ireland indicate whether a family and its members speak/read/write english/irish or both. there was a lot of pressure at the time to actually adopt english or to not claim that you speak irish, i think financial incentives if you indicated that you had switched to english as your language, so hard to say how accurate they are, but my ancestors in the mid 1800s wrote that they spoke english at home. interesting



sadly, i know the image of irish culture has been totally popularized and caricaturized over decades, so it has a strong element of cringe if you take interest in "irish culture" at all. hopefully in a short time it can be taken more legitimately.

Young people in Ireland are not very interested in learning Irish, they say that it is useless when you have English and people who speak Irish have problems speaking it almost as if it were a foreign language, only the older ones stay with the language Irish, if the government does not find a way to motivate the population to learn Irish, it will be reduced to a minority and in the not too distant future could become extinct.

Learning a language is difficult and people have to enjoy life and work. I understand it will always remain a literary legacy thing, sadly. But it should be taught in school still giving Irish the tools to delve deeper in it should the interest strike them. Irish literature should get digitalised as much as possible and made available. Just my two cents.
