Egypt says archaeologists have unearthed more than two dozen ancient coffins in a vast necropolis south of Cairo
By SAMY MAGDY Associated Press 21 September 2020, 18:52

CAIRO -- Egyptian archaeologists have unearthed more than two dozen ancient coffins in a vast necropolis south of Cairo, an official said Monday.

The sarcophagi have remained unopened since they were buried more than 2,500 years ago near the famed Step Pyramid of Djoser in Saqqara, said Neveine el-Arif, a spokeswomen for the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities. She said 13 coffins were found earlier this month in a newly discovered, 11 meter-deep (36 feet) well, and that 14 more were found last week in another well.

Footage shared by the ministry showed colorful sarcophagi decorated with ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics, as well as other artifacts the ministry said were found in the two wells.

The Saqqara plateau hosted at least 11 pyramids, including the Step Pyramid, along with hundreds of tombs of ancient officials, ranging from the 1st Dynasty (2920 B.C.-2770 B.C.) to the Coptic period (395-642).

Archaeologists were still working to determine the origins of the coffins, el-Arif said, adding that more details and “secrets” would likely be announced next month.

In recent years, Egypt has heavily promoted new archaeological finds to international media and diplomats in an effort to revive its key tourism sector by attracting more tourists to the country.

El-Arif said further excavations were underway in the necropolis, and more coffins were expected to be found.

Last year, archaeologists found a cache at Saqqara that included hundreds of mummified animals, birds and crocodiles, as well as two mummified lion cubs.

The Saqqara plateau is part of the necropolis of Egypt’s ancient city of Memphis, that also include Abu Sir, Dahshur and Abu Ruwaysh and the famed Giza Pyramids. The ruins of Memphis were designed a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1970s.

In October 2019, archaeologists unearthed 30 ancient wooden coffins with inscriptions and paintings in the southern city of Luxor.

The Luxor coffins were moved to be showcased at the Grand Egyptian Museum, which Egypt is building near the Giza Pyramids.

Egypt’s key tourism sector has suffered from the years of political turmoil and violence following the 2011 uprising that toppled autocrat Hosni Mubarak, and the sector was dealt a further blow this year by the global coronavirus pandemic.

Now, I want to make it very clear to people here that despite what some users here like Waddad would like to say otherwise, ancient Egyptians were NEVER Blacks to begin with, and they clustered the closest to their neighbors in the Levant than to other Africans including say Maghrebis(Tunisians, Eastern Libyans, Moroccans and Algerians) who are genetically North Africans while Egyptians were/are middle easterners. I've used the G25 coordinates to represent ancient Egyptians of an ancient Egyptian woman from Beirut from the same time period as these ancient mummies from this 2020 genetic study as well as Canaanite coordinates from cities like Sidon.

Unsurprisingly, the Dinka and the Yoruba don't have any genetic affinity to the ancient Egyptians while the Egyptian Muslims have the most affinity to them. The people who are the most affiliated to the ancient Egyptians are Palestinian Muslims due to admixtures with Egyptian fala7een or peasants from central and upper Egypt that migrated to Palestine not long ago in contrast to Pali Christians who are genetically pretty pure. East Africans like Ethiopians and Somalis are not purely Blacks either, and they cluster in between ancient Egyptians and Blacks like the Yoruba and the Dinka.

Maybe high class ancient Egyptians didn´t have a lot of SSA in their bloods, but I don´t know why you think that common people in ancient Egypt was not mixed with people from Nubia, Punt or Kush, even they are a lot of images in ancient Egypt coloured reliefs that show they were black, not only in skin colour but also in features.

I have not seen where were the group of archeologist are from, could we know that information?

It´s a wonderful finding, although those coffins are not very ancient comparing with the long Historical existence of ancient Egypt.

Have you watched the video? The G25 coordinates I'm using is from that 2020 study. The Egyptian woman in Beirut and the Absur mummies were NOT of royalty but rather the common folk. Not denying that they mixed with Nubians and other Black groups, but it was a much later period during the Roman till the Islamic slave trade that made modern day Egyptians more SSA admixed than their ancestors.
