Genetically yes. Campanians are deep south Italians. I've been there, pretty sure Georgians are lighter than them as they are quite swarthy.

The fact is that Georgia is culturally, mentally and historically (for the most part) completely alien to the majority of Europe (and this isn't necessarily a good or bad thing, it just is). Georgians are Georgians and Caucasians, and that's pretty much where it ends.

Alien to which Europe? Celtic? yes! Slavic? Hell no! We have much more common with East European Orthodox people than anyone else. Average Georgian would feel like at home in many Slavic countries, than in Muslim Dagestan, let alone Middle East countries. Iraq is completely alien for Georgian, when Ukraine, Russia, Belorussia or even Poland is not.

I said most of Europe. I only consider Caucasus to have similarities with the Balkans for the most part, which in a sense is in fact peripherally European. And I didn't mention genetics or autosomal DNA, so don't put words in my mouth.

The question is why some people who are not really "European" insist on being so? Does it really matter if Georgians (or Armenians, Azeris or whatever) are considered European?

I get your point. In case of Georgia, geopolitics is also a major factor of their European identity. An accession to the EU would also preserve them from Russian domination in Eurasia.
