Battle of Diu 1538 - Ottomans vs. Portuguese (War of India)

The Siege of Diu occurred when an army of the Sultanate of Gujarat under Khadjar Safar, aided by forces of the Ottoman Empire, attempted to capture the city of Diu in 1538, then held by the Portuguese. The Portuguese successfully resisted the four months long siege, at the end just 14 Portuguese soldiers remained alive when reinforcement alive, something absolutely impressive considering the size and might of the Ottomans.

The Battle of Diu is considered as one of the most important battles in history. The author William Weir in his book 50 Battles That Changed the World, ranks this battle as the 6th most important in history, losing only to the Battle of Marathon, the Nika Rebellion, the Battle of Bunker Hill, the Battle of Arbela (Gaugamela) and the Battle of Hattin. He says: "When the 15th century began, Islam seemed about ready to dominate the world. That prospect sank in the Indian Ocean off Diu." The historian Rainer Daehnhardt says that this battle is compared only to the Battles of Lepanto and Trafalgar in terms of importance and legacy. According to the scholar Michael Adas, this battle "established European Naval superiority in the Indian Ocean for centuries to come."

Had we lost this war, the entire Indian subcontinent would probably be Muslim.

They wouldn't necessarily be Muslim unless they would of converted. Many Orthodox Christians in the Balkans were under 500 years of Ottoman rule and many of them never converted, not because they were ''superior'' , resisting such conversions for 500 years wasn't the result of supposedly strong willed people but because of a strong church which the local population was allowed to operate under even under the Ottomans. Therefor conversion wasn't a requirement. It was different among some of the Catholics, who's religious identity was weaker at that point. Making the switch over to Islam was eventually easier.

And btw, the video posted here is about the battle of Diu in 1538 which was mostly a siege while the quote that Viriato/Brás refers to is about the 1509 Naval Battle of Diu which was far more significant than the 1538 one.

I think with D Day and Waterloo the war was already decided. Stalingrad on the other hand was the turning point in WW2, much more important in my opinion.

These kind of battles need to be mentioned more often and appriciated. Those men and women inside the big and small fortresses fought courageously.

Yes, true. The Battle of Stalingrad was the turning point of the WW2, also the battle of Midway in the Pacific context, but the Japanese were already defeated when they attacked Pearl Harbor.
