Nazi memorabilia went under the hammer in Nelson on Sunday despite multiple calls for the items to be withdrawn and an overnight graffiti attack on the auction house.

Police confirmed they were investigating an incident of wilful damage to a business premises in Nelson.

About 20 people reportedly attended the auction. Some were residents who outlined their concerns, and said they were asked to leave after they spoke out.

Anne Smith said the auction made her feel “ashamed after what we promised the Muslim people, to stand beside them in banning all right-wing ideology in New Zealand”.

“To see all those swastikas pinned up around the walls made me physically ill,” Smith said. “The loss of lives from all countries, war glorified for profit.”
