Back in Yugoslavia time there were Serbian champs, mainly boxers (kickboxing was relatively unpopular sport back then and MMA didn't even exist), most popular (and sucessful) were brothers Slobodan and Tadija Kačar (Slobodan was world champion in light heavyweight category and Tadija was light middleweight vice champ) but then with Yugoslavian war, Serbs just stopped investing in combat sports. One of the main reasons for that is because in 90s a lot of people who trained box or kickbox were criminals, last important Serbian combat athlete was Zoran Šijan, European champion and 3rd in world, but his main occupation was criminal. Even today most people in Serbia consider people who train some combat sport as criminals or at least as problematic persons (i know this from my personal experience since i train MMA), in Croatia things are bit different. At this moment biggest Serbian hope is Austrian born Serb Aleksandar Rakić who is in top 5 MMA light heavyweights in the world currently.
