On this day 86 years ago (9 October 1934), King Aleksandar I Karađorđević was assassinated in Marseilles by the Croatian Ustasha and Bulgarian IMRO. French Minister of foreign affairs Louis Barthou was wounded in the arm but died later due to inadequate medical treatment. The assassin was a member of IMRO, Vlado Černozemski (born Velichko Dimitrov Kerin, Bulgrarian revolutionary and the most dangerous terrorist in Europe of his time). The death of King Aleksandar Karađorđević deeply shocked the whole of Yugoslavia, and his body was accompanied by hundreds of thousands of people all the way up to Oplenac, where he was buried in the endowment of King Petar I.
