    Vermont is weird as there were no any European settlers in Vermont until 1724, even though everything around it was already colonized.

    =====

    BTW, here are the maps for year 1800 and year 1849:

    Utah exceeded 5000 only after the Mormon migration:

    Maybe I'll add also >100,000 category not just >5000.

    =====

    Alabama for example still only had 1250 non-Native (white and black) inhabitants in year 1800.

    Around 1750 is probably when European population of the USA & Canada was already larger than Native population.

    In 1700 there were still more Natives than Europeans with less than 300,000 colonials (and this includes also Blacks).

    But of course in 1750 European population was still almost entirely living along the East Coast.

    They had very few inhabitants before 1800.

    Also in 1680 New Mexico had 2500 European settlers (Spanish) but next year Pueblo Indians revolted - 450 Spanish were killed and the rest had to escape from New Mexico. For the next 10 years New Mexico had no white population.

    It was during that uprising when Spanish horses escaped and later Great Plains Indians domesticated them.

    And after New Mexico was reconquered by the Spanish?

    In year 1850, only 27% of the inhabitants of Texas were born in Texas:

    Only when there was economic sense then people were invited to own the lots. newer states like Texas, Colorado, Kansas etc.. were not considered safe until late 1800s when there was sufficient people in army to patrol those farms & homes.
