Until very recently I was under the impression that they were very similar to Armenians, Persians, and Kurds with just a little extra Mongoloid ancestry and that Iranian Azeris were even more similar to Persians than their Azerbaijani counterparts. Now I'd say they fit within the Turkish genetic spectrum much more than the Iranian one.

Keep in mind though that when we use "Turkmen_Uzbekistan as a reference" that Turkmen are only about 30% Mongoloid and the rest is Iranic(unsurprising if you know the history of the region).
