Morocco joins Saudi Arabia, UAE in de-facto boycott of Turkish goods
Turkish exporters are struggling with shrinking markets as Morocco appears to have joined the countries that are effectively boycotting all products made in Turkey.

    October 15 2020 12:24 pm (+03)

After hiking taxes on imported Turkish goods by 90 percent, Morocco appears to be joining Saudi Arabia and the UAE in a de-facto boycott of products made in Turkey amid rising regional tensions.

Turkish exporters have had difficulties in the Saudi Arabian and Emirati markets as those countries have maintained an unofficial policy of not importing Turkish goods for more than a year.

Those difficulties have spread to North Africa, which normally present substantial markets to Turkish exporters. In 2019, Algeria imported $1.86 billion in Turkish goods while Morocco hauled in $2.24 billion, according to figures from the Turkish Exporters’ Assembly (TİM).

In recent weeks, however, Turkey has had trouble in North African countries, and Morocco in particular, following exorbitant tax hikes, Reuters reported.

The Moroccan tax increase is reportedly slated to be in place for the next five years. Sources from the Moroccan Ministry of Trade indicate that measures have been put in place to prevent unfair competition from Turkish textile producers who are dominating the local market.

“There has always been a tough situation with Morocco. It imposes high tariffs, especially at customs duties checkpoints, in order to support more domestic production. But the fact that Morocco is now included in the equation with Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Egypt has made its attitude towards us a little more difficult, it has become tougher than before,” said Giyasettin Eyüpkoca, president of the Laleli Industrialists and Businessman’s Association (LASİAD).

there is no boycott : The Moroccan government has validated the draft revision of the free trade agreement between Morocco and Turkey. Thus, nearly 1,200 products made in Turkey will be taxed, mainly those of textiles and clothing. The goal is to protect Moroccan jobs and guarantee the sectors concerned, fair competition.

Don't mind her. She's..well, let's say that she has a big Turkish thorn up her butt. That's a pretty normal and healthy way of doing things really since you don't want your own local industries to be tanked by foreign imports.

Egyptian MP suggests imposing boycott on Turkish products

A member of the Egyptian House of Representative presented a proposal to the government on Wednesday suggesting a boycott be imposed on Turkish products of all kinds.

“It is no longer a secret to anyone that Egyptian interests contradict Turkish interests recently, at all political and economic levels,” said Hala Abu al-Saad, the deputy head of the Small and Medium Projects Committee in the House of Representatives.

She added that the volume of trade exchange between Egypt and Turkey reached about US$1.68 billion, of which $1.24 billion were imports, compared to $448.3 million dollars exports to Turkey during the fiscal year 2018-2019, according to statistics of the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS).

“There is evidence of Turkey’s hostility towards Egyptian interests, with Turkey working to threaten Egypt’s stability and spread terrorism on its borders.

“Despite this, Turkish products are still circulating in the Egyptian market in a large way, which can be considered support to the Turkish state, and there are also many tourist trips that are directed to Turkey,” Saad said.

She demanded the issuance of an institutional decision to impose a boycott on Turkish products of all kinds and to develop a strategy to achieve this.

“Turkey is practicing clear aggression against Egypt and the entire Arab region. It is hostile to Egypt’s interests and is working to sow terrorism in our countries, and we must move economically against Turkey by boycotting Turkish products and stopping economic agreements with them,” she said.

And that's for a good reason : "In 2019, the trade deficit with Turkey exceeded 19.5 billion DH, an increase of 22% compared to 2018. Imports from Ankara have steadily increased by + 19%, or 25 billion DH against barely 6 , 1 billion DH for exports. The level of trade places Turkey in a better position to the disadvantage of Morocco. Thus, it represents 5.2% of Moroccan imports against barely 2.2% of exports."

It's for economical reasons not politics like peninsular arabs. Morocco has good relations with turkey there is absolutely no tension.
