    Exclamation Any Greeks help me?

I have never been able to accurately find where you would find my families last name or a area of origin.
I was hoping you all might be able to help? My great pappou and my family last name prior to coming to USA (a lot of them changed it to Americanize).
Our family last name is Venetithis (prior to America, some of my family in Greece carries it still), My great pappou had a long first name but we all called him Sava (I am not putting the full name for privacy reasons)

Curious if any Greeks here after knowledge or a rough place of origin within Greece, Balkans or Anatolia for that name?

I know my family name shows "slavic etymology" for the first part.. but I know for a possible fact my family did not carry that specific name since the 800s lol

And my great pappou served a while in a Turkish prison before he escaped and broke out and moved to America and sent the rest of his family to Thrace, just mostly curious as I am first generation American, if any Greeks have came across that name or what not back in that nation?

    Realy?
Doesn't sound very Pontic unless you didn't spell it correctly, maybe you meant Venetidis?

Anyway it reminds me of Venetian lol

Thats a typcial Pontic name haha its also very common for Pontics as the surname Savvidis

Venetidis sounds Pontic or no from your knowledge?

And yes Sava is what we called him lol,

Would you know if that is more closer to Europe or further east towards Georgia side? I am trying to figure some knowledge out of my family that they can not answer accurately for me

Yeah its Pontic the -idis is basicly a suffix they put at the surname and the prefix comes usually from some sort of nickname
maybe he had a remote ancestors who was Venetian or had some sort or relationship to Venice and they gave him that name but thats highly speculative

For example if i would turn my username into a Pontic surname it would by Tauromachidis(The one who fights bulls) or if a Pontian Greek maybe is a Wrestler and very strong like a Lion they might call his ancestors by Leondaridis.

https://el.wikipedia.org/wiki/Στέλιος_Βενετίδης There's apparently a football player with this lastname (Venetidis) and he was born in Orestiada, Thrace.

edit : There's an app as well https://apps.vrisko.gr/apo-pou-krata...8;ης which shows you the prevalence of your lastname. It seems to pick around central/east macedonia and Thrace.

Was going to say -idis is very common in Thracian Greeks too.

Yeah it isn't exclusivly restricted to Pontic Greeks

Some Islanders have surnames with the -idis suffix too

Awesome, my family moved mostly to Thrace in the 1920s I believe. A lot in modern day have gone more to Kavala. I would have to visit them to ask where they settled down after since the ones in America have forgotten or who had the knowledge passed away a couple years back. This information helps me put details into perspective as well as formulating a good start hypothesis for my reasearch.

    It is much appreciated!
