During the Ottoman times; women were not allowed to be in the same public space with men and play in theatres. Polygamy was legal. Young Turks pushed for more freedom and brought idealist reforms to the country in the revolution of 1909; but their defeat in the WW1 saw the reinstallation of a backward monarch regime. The country needed an iron-handed, strong-willed leader with a charisma like Ataturk who could make radical changes.
