In Mexico's (north) case it supposedly came from German settlers that arrived to Texas in the 1800'sDon't forget Silesian*.I have TV Silesia channel and there is a top list of Silesian schlagers Lista Śląskich Szlagierów every week.
Also there is as well unrelated Swedish schlager music (very different style).
*albeit it's surely a German influence.
