Default Types of Slavic ancestry in the U.S. & Canada

This chart shows a breakdown by state / province of various types of Slavic ancestry.

    I divided into 5 groups:

    - EastSlavicUB (Ukrainians, Belarusians & related)
    - EastSlavicRU (Russians & related)
    - SouthSlavic (all of South Slavs / Balkan Slavs)
    - WestSouth (Czechia & Slovakia)
    - WestNorth (Polish & related)

As you can see there is a big difference in Ukrainian ancestry between US vs. Canada:

People who answered "Slavic" were included in South Slavic.

Most of them are Croatians followed by "Yugoslavs".

Shit thread. Croats are most numerous south Slavs in US, if you made own cathegory for your own folks you should have made for all.
Absolute nonsense as some of listed south slavic groups almost don't exist in US.

Here you have a breakdown for South Slavs, but U.S. censuses lump up most of them together as "Yugoslavian":

[sorted from lowest to highest % of Croatians]

In Canada as a whole Croats are less than 29% of all South Slavs / in Mississippi Croats are 83% of South Slavs:

Here exact breakdown for South Slavs in Canada (the whole country):

    Croatian - 28.761% - 133970
    Serbian - 20.725% - 96535
    Yugoslav - 17.481% - 81425
    Macedonian - 9.254% - 43105
    Slovenian - 8.686% - 40460
    Bulgarian - 7.417% - 34550
    Bosnian - 5.738% - 26725
    Slavic - 1.044% - 4865
    Montenegrin - 0.894% - 4165

In the U.S. Montenegrins and Bosnians are counted among Yugoslavs.

It would be good to know the total Slavic population percentage in each state vs the general population. I imagine it is high in upper Midwest states like Michigan and low in the southern states.

By the way, the U.S. Census Bureau also considers these responses to ancestry question as Eastern Europeans:

(yes, people who report being "Northern European" are considered Eastern Europeans by U.S. Census Bureau*)

    Central European

    European
    Hungarian
    Latvian
    Lithuanian
    Northern European
    Rom
    Romanian
    Soviet
    Moldovan
    Other Eastern European

    ^^^
If you add these, then the total percentages for East Europeans (excluding Albanians if you see them as such):

    Saskatchewan 28.4%
    Alberta 22.8%
    Connecticut 18.3%

Wisconsin and Illinois have a lot of Poles that live in Chicago and Milwaukee. Many came from the old Prussian empire in the late 1800's and early 1900's. Many Jews as well.

Minnesota's Slavs are the Iron Range miners that emigrated from the old Austro-Hungarian empire and Kashubians that live in the rural areas. Lots of Slavs in Canada's western provinces and farms.
