I came to a similar conclusion when I read about him. He seemed to identify more with his native Persian culture than with Islam. Naming a Persian guy the Mahdi and in 931 instituting fire worship as well as burning religious books and cursing prophets and lastly, his sacking of Mecca. He was probably a Persian at heart who pretended to be Muslim.

Must agree with Wadaad about this. Saudi government would kill this guy for no reason and no one would say an inch about it, but putting him on TV to say those things is basically creating some motto to show how they are persecuted and whatever. Like "see, we have enemies here and we're not that radical as some people think!"

As an Iranian you should be aware of the "Zaher" (Outwardly) and the "Baten" (Occult). The Zaher was your claim that he was a messianic fellow. The Baten goal was to finally plunge a lethal dagger in the heart of Islam and to destroy the Kaaba.

Wat? He was barely even Persian to begin with, his mother was from the Banu'l-Qassar and he got his ideologies from Hamdan Qarmat. He was pretty merciless towards the Saffarids when they tried to stop him by request of the caliph and he killed hundreds of Persian pilgrims so I doubt he cared about Persians or Iran at all. I don't think he ever even lived there

Only he was part-Iranian, the entire state was mostly Zanj workers and local Gulf Arabs. I assume they all wanted to destroy Islam as well?
He was simply one of many Shia militant groups of the time and wanted to bring upon the Mahdi. Obviously he had bloodlust which led to the massacres he did but I doubt it was anything beyond fanaticism

If you wanna destroy something, but need the dumb sheep to do it...You don't tell them you wanna destroy, you tell them something more palatable. Like ushering the Mahdi. It's the "pied piper" trope and even applies today, not just with the History of medieval Islam. This is how the world works.
