    That might be so, but Domi dembow/regueton/trap has made A LOT of inroads in the last couple of years. Just the success of El Alfa is a sample of a larger trend.

    Colombia has Shakira, Maluma, J Balvin. Even Sofía Vergara, lol.

    Merengue and Bachata have been commercially bigger than Cumbia though.

    If it wouldnt have been for her political pariah status, Cuba would have been more important than Mexico culturally speaking, since many artists and ventures that were on the island before the revolution would have continued there instead of moving to Mexico after the event.

    The thing about Marti is that, ironically, both pro- and anti-Castro Cubans adore him and claim his legacy.
