Serbian Patriarch Pavle, the 44th Patriarch of the Serbian Orthodox Church, died on this day 15 November in 2009. People remember his words and teachings and retell them gladly, and many consider him a saint even though he hasn't been canonized yet by the Serbian Orthodox Church. Patriarch Pavle was known not only for his wisdom but also the humble life that he led. Pavle was highly respected for his modesty and wisdom. It wasn't beneath his dignity to sew or to repair windows himself. The memory of this unusual, gentle man, who was both an intellectual and craftsmen remained alive even five years after his death. While many people were buying luxury cars, he went everywhere on foot or by public transport. And in shoes that he made and repaired himself. The story says that he learned the shoemaking craft from a man who was repairing shoes in the vicinity of the Patriarchate. One day he saw a driver in front of the Patriarchate who was trying to change a tire on his car, and asked him to borrow a piece of rubber the man was going to throw away. From that piece of rubber, Patriarch Pavle cut a mold and patched his shoes.
