Strictly speaking Americans are not truly free unless they are rich (most Americans are not) or are the living incarnation of the literary device known as the noble savage. Freedom is an illusion in civilized society rather there are varying degrees of slavery. Even rich people are constrained to some degree, by bourgeois society, in their behavior even it less so than the poor.
