    Default Syrian surname

    Hello everyone

My great-grandfather's name was Farid Homes. I know nothing about him, just he was Syrian.

Which is the surname? Farid or Homes?

    Is Homes a Turkish surname?

    Thanks!

Homes was the surname and it is not Turkish. Maybe it has a connection with the city Homs.

Is it means lost my true surname? ... I'm sad now. How can I discover my true surname? My grandmother give me two opitions: Homes or Home, but she think Homes was which she heard. But maybe Homs is the correct form, because she only heard it. The name of the Christian city of Homs (La Chamelle). Can a Turkish/ Syrian help me?

I fell shy to talk about it, but my great-grandmother was forced to prostitute herself in order to get food.

I don't think Homs is Turkish, however I'm pretty sure all Levant immigrants in LATAM were called "Turks" due to Ottoman nationality

I know the answer and am certain Im correct...He was from Homs, Syria

Alot of Levantines and Mesopotamians used their birthtown as their 'surname' when they mgrated to the West. Even Armenians..so you see people named "Sam Tripoli" or "George Halabi" or even "Mikhail Baghdadi" etc.

Farid is the first name...it means "Clever"

In all likelihood it refers to the city of Homs, assuming the surname is in fact of syrian origin.
