Regional media outlets responded strongly to Zoran Zaev’s interview with the Buglarian BGNES news agency, in which he accepted all Bulgarian positions on issues of history and national identity. The interview is being welcomed in the Bulgarian press although it is not getting especially prominent coverage.

But in outlets based in what was Yugoslavia, Zaev’s positions are widely mocked. Especially so his claim that it was Yugoslavia that kept Macedonia and Bulgaria apart, and that Bulgaria was not an occupier but a liberator of Macedonia during the Second World War.

Bosnian based Al Jazeera and Avaz lead with the statement that Zaev is blaming Yugoslavia for separating Macedonia from Bulgaria, prompting comments from readers that Macedonia would’ve been gobbled up if it were otherwise. “Zaev sucks up to the Bulgarians”, wrote the pro-Russian Pravda site from Serbia, while the pro-Government Informer tabloid in Serbia advised Zaev that he is “smarter when he keeps his mouth shut”.

Possibly. Either way, he and today's Bulgarians can try to deny what they did in WW2. That will be for domestic consumption. The world however knows exactly who fought on which side and what they did during the war.

Commissariat of Jewish Affairs

In February 1942, the Commissariat of Jewish Affairs was established as a department within the Interior Ministry. Gabrovski appointed Belev to serve as the new body's first chairman. He promulgated a new set of laws in August 1942 governing the treatment of Bulgaria's Jews. Based on the Nuremberg Laws, Belev's decrees instituted the wearing of identification stars, corralling into ghettoes and strong restrictions on the movement of Jews.[9]

During this time Belev was a close associate and political ally of SS-Hauptsturmfuhrer Theodor Dannecker, chief of the Gestapo in Bulgaria and deputy to Adolf Eichmann.[10]

Belev's role had officially been to resettle Bulgaria's Jewish population but in June 1942 he reported that such a solution would be impossible during wartime, unless the Bulgarian government was prepared to turn the task over to the Germans.[11] As such on 22 February 1943 he signed a pact with Dannecker to deliver 20,000 Jews to Eichmann, with 12,000 coming from the newly annexed territories of Western Thrace and east Macedonia and the rest from Bulgaria,

No matter what Zaev says, no one in Bulgaria believes his words. Northern Macedonia will not have the green light to join the EU until it fulfills its obligations under the agreement with Bulgaria. When it decides to implement them, then the negotiation framework will begin. But this will not happen, because their hate speech stops them. They had good teachers in the form of Serbian dogs and murderers, the lowest nation in the Balkans.
