Sweden became a great power in the 17th century af-
ter long-term warfare with its neighbours. The Great
Northern War started in 1700 as a protest against Swe-
den’s power politics. The Russian occupation of Finland
in 1713–1721 is called the Greater Wrath. After the Battle
of Napo, Peter the Great ordered the Cossack troops to
terrorise the locals. Men were killed, villages destroyed
and women and children taken as slaves to Russia.
