I thought the lion was rocking on the sword for lols or something, and not trampling it.

If you look at the Finnish coat of arms during the Russian era, you see how they changed it; the lion keeps the scimitar in his left hand and the western sword is much smaller. Russians obviously tried to tell that they were heirs of Ghengis Khan.
