    Default Serbian - Hellenic Brotherhood

This thread is dedicated to promotion of Greek-Serbian friendship, brotherhood, and unity.

    First World War

The first direct contact between the two peoples occurred during the First World War, when, at the beginning of 1916, over 150,000 Serbian soldiers and civilians were evacuated to the Greek island of Corfu. Contrary to the position of the Greek government, which was against the entry of the Serbian army into its territory, due to which the Entente forces were forced to occupy the island that was part of the territory of then neutral Greece, the inhabitants of Corfu, deeply shaken by the suffering of Serbian soldiers and civilians, established very close relations. with its new neighbors.

The close relations between the Greek and Serbian people on the island manifested themselves in several ways. The Serbian government was stationed at the Bela Venezia Hotel in Corfu. Church of St. Archangel, st. Trinity and St. Nikola was temporarily ceded to Serbs for religious purposes. Sports competitions and cultural events were held daily in Corfu, such as theater performances and concerts in which Serbian competitors and performers participated. The municipal authorities of Corfu gave the printing house to the Serbs for use. Thanks to modern printing machines provided by the French, "Srpske novine" soon began to appear in Corfu.
Many Serbs have decided to settle permanently on the island, and a large number of mixed marriages have taken place. All three daughters of the owner of the "White Venice" hotel, Mr. Ioannis Gazis, married Serbs. It is interesting to point out that the middle daughter of August married the future prime minister of the Yugoslav government, Milan Stojadinović. The wife of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, Aleksandar Cincar-Marković, was also from Corfu.

The "Serbian House", which still exists in Corfu and which houses the museum "Serbs in Corfu 1916-1918" and the honorary consulate of the Republic of Serbia, also testifies to the friendly relationship between the Serbian and Greek people, which developed during this period.
However, the friendly relationship between the two peoples did not change the attitude of the Greek government, which refused to allow the transfer of the Serbian army by land to the Thessaloniki front.

    Interesting facts about Greek-Serbian friendship

Although almost every tourist who goes on holiday from Serbia to Greece feels like at home, but every Greek from Serbia also has many fond memories, history records that there are still those members of both nations who are not so kind to each other.

Joke aside, there are a large number of stories, not to mention legends, which mostly refer to the most sensitive topic - love, and that developed between Greek women and Serbian warriors who survived the Albanian Golgotha and the breakthrough of the Thessaloniki front.

One of the most impressive ones can still be heard in Vrnjačka Banja, and it is related to the attraction of this place, which is known as the Bridge of Love. That story says that a teacher named Nada, just before the beginning of the First World War, fell in love with an officer whose name was Relja. According to the older residents of Vrnjačka Banja who are familiar with this story, the two of them met right on this bridge, planning a wedding and their future life together.

But ... The war came, Relja went to defend his homeland, Nada stayed to wait for him and hope ... They say that she would stand on today's Bridge of Love for a long time, waiting for the man she loves to return. Years passed, and the only thing she found out was that Relja married a Greek woman and forgot Nada and the promise given. Soon Nada left this world, but she remained a legend of unrequited love, which still lives today. Precisely out of a desire not to lose their love, like this teacher once upon a time, the victorious people of Vrnjačka Banja came up with the idea to hang padlocks on the fence of the bridge on which they write the name of their loved one, and symbolically throw the keys into the diminutive Vrnjačka river. have made a kind of attraction.

On the other hand, in our brotherly Greece, there is a "Greek teacher Nada", who was a native of the island of Corfu. They say that she loved one Serb and he loved her, but when he recovered, they started to break through the Thessaloniki front. He went to defend his homeland, leaving his girlfriend, and legend has it that he never returned. The story goes on to say that, mourning for her beloved, she sang a song, which in a strange way became a symbol of friendship between our two peoples, and which was masterfully sung by the Greek artist, George Dalaras. Although this is just a legend, because the song "Mi mou thimonis matia mou" was actually written in a completely different way, it is certainly inspired by some real event.

    Fatherland war

During the War in Bosnia, dozens of Greek volunteers fought in the name of Orthodoxy and Greek-Serbian friendship on the side of the Army of Republic of Srpska against the military forces of the government in Sarajevo. Several dozen Greeks spent several months and up to two years in the ranks of the VRS in the period from 1992 to 1995. Greek volunteers were grouped in the so-called Greek Volunteer Guard stationed in Vlasenica in central Bosnia. It was noted that this unit took part in the fighting in the vicinity of Srebrenica, where, after entering the city, the Greek flag was displayed on the destroyed Orthodox church.

Volunteers were recruited in Belgrade, while liaison centers were established in Athens and Thessaloniki. According to the volunteers, the Greek government did not interfere with the recruitment and sending of volunteers to Bosnia, while the Greek intelligence service was in constant contact with them. On this occasion, the AFP also quoted the President of the Republic of Srpska, Radovan Karadzic, who stated: "Serbs have only two friends, God and the Greeks."

During the period of 1993-2011. Greek people, Church and state accepted almost 20.000 Serbian children, whose one or both parents died in the Fatherland war in 1991-1995, or disabled's children. Children were taken over by families across Greece, from south on Crete, to north in Greek Macedonia and from Ionian islands to Thrace and Aegean islands.
Organized by the Greek Orthodox Church (and the Athens Archdiocese and the Patriarchate of Constantinople) several thousand more Serbian children from war areas, Serbian Krajina, Republic of Srpska, Metohija and Kosovo.
Greek brothers know best who the Serbs are and what our famous ancestors were like who lived in Corfu from 1915., until the breakthrough of Thessaloniki front, September 1918. Their grandchildren and great-grandchildren also knew well that Serbs suffer and fight only to survive on their own.

    NATO bombing of FR Yugoslavia

Only a few days after the beginning of the NATO bombing of FR Yugoslavia, in Athens on March 26, 1999. demonstrations against NATO action broke out. A crowd of over 10,000 protesters shouted anti-American slogans in front of the American embassy. A group of Serbs who found themselves in the Greek capital joined the protesters, who carried banners with inscriptions indicating a strong connection between the two peoples based on belonging to the same Orthodox faith. Protesters clashed with police who used tear gas to break up demonstrations. On the same day, the Greek government demanded an end to the bombing and a return to negotiations.

In addition to participating in anti-American demonstrations, members of the Greek people were ready to provide concrete assistance to the friendly Serbian people. In the report of the Macedonian News Agency, dated March 26, 1999. it is about 250 Greek volunteers who applied to go to Serbia in order, according to them, to "help Serbs they consider friends and brothers".

The Greek people continued to protest against the NATO bombing of FR Yugoslavia even after the cessation of hostilities. US President Bill Clinton's visit to Greece on November 19, 1999. was the occasion for mass anti-American demonstrations. Over 10,000 protesters gathered in Athens for demonstrations organized by left-wing parties. Leftists protested against the participation of the USA in the NATO bombing of FR Yugoslavia.

The gathered citizens headed to the American embassy, burning the American flag along the way. Greek police tried to stop the protesters in their intention, which led to an open conflict between the protesters and the police. Tear gas, stones and Molotov cocktails were used in the conflict, which lasted well into the night. Although he intended to stay on a longer visit to the Greek capital, Bill Clinton shortened his stay in Greece for security reasons.

George Dalaras, a famous Greek singer, held a concert in 1999 on Aristotle Square in Thessaloniki, in support of the people of Serbia during the NATO bombing. In the same year, while the bombing was going on, Dalaras held a humanitarian concert in Belgrade, on Republic Square.

At the same time, Mikis Theodorakis held concerts in Athens in support of the Serbian people.

Marinos Ritsoudis – A Greek captain who refused to bomb Serbia in 1999

As a member of NATO during the bombing in 1999, Greece was forced to send its warship “Temistoklis” to the Adriatic sea. However, the crew was disappointed by this decision of their government which is why the captain Marinos Ritsoudis refused to bomb Yugoslavia and returned the ship back to its port.

“As an Orthodox Christian I can not participate in an attack on a brotherly nation,” said Marinos Ritsoudis on that occasion.

    Greek humanitarian aid for Serbia

Numerous Greek humanitarian organizations and the Greek Orthodox Church organized numerous actions during the 1990s to send tons and tons of humanitarian aid to Serbia. These activities were especially intensified during the NATO bombing of FR Yugoslavia. Thus, on May 18, 1999, humanitarian aid from the Greek Orthodox Church was delivered to Serbia, intended for the workers of the bombed Zastava car factory. Over 150 tons of food and medicine were distributed to employed and retired workers and members of their families.

Actions to deliver humanitarian aid to Serbia continued after the bombing. Princess Katherine, who is of Greek origin, has a prominent role in the organization of humanitarian actions in which help arrives in Serbia from Greece. On December 29, 2004, the Greek humanitarian organization Lifeline Hellas, under the patronage of Princess Katherine, delivered a shipment of clothes, food and toys intended for children without parental care, children with disabilities and refugee children throughout Serbia. Humanitarian aid from Greece has found its way to Serbian children in Kosovo and Metohija.

Thousands of children from Serbia and Republic of Srpska spent their summers with Greek families, and many Greeks still help the children of fallen fighters: financially, both with clothes and groceries.

    Zorica Marinković:
"Greece saved me from the war in 1994. My other family accepted me as their daughter, they gave me a wonderful childhood and helped us financially. What else to say ... I love Greek music, i never forgot the language, not even my beautiful Athens , nor will i ever. I love Greek cinema, the inimitable Aliki Vujuklaki and Vegos ... I love everything Greek !!! "
