That's interesting. I thought the finno-Ugaric peoples in felt respected in Russia. Did you travel to This part of Russia?

I have a vague book knowledge of the Finno-Ugrics of Russia, and that's as far as my knowledge goes, so take this for what you think it's worth.

I don't know about in Communist times, but certainly in Czarist ones , Russification did indeed suppress minority expression of culture and language. I'm sure that's not the case today, though (at least not as a conscious and deliberate government and social policy).* The Komi are not a hopeless case though, as I think several hundred thousand are still fluent in their native language. So with commitment on the part of Komi themselves, plus Moscow policy of at least non-interference in their cultural redevelopment, their culture can be rebuilt.

*And yes, I fully admit the USA is definitely not without "sin" in this regard either, especially to our Native Americans...and even our Cajuns (French descended settlers of southern Louisiana who lived there for 2 to 3 generations before the US gained control of that area from France).

Has anyone even seen other Finnic people around the volga? Like the Mari, Udmurts, mordvins, These people seem slightly Asian looking
