Genetic proximity of Slovenians to other European nations

Thank you for the informative answer. What is this data based on? I'm asking, since from what I know Slovenes and Slovaks usually have about the same percentage of R1a, which I thought is usually considered the main measurement of "Slavicness". Also what would being Balkan mean? Being related to Thracians, Illyrians and other paleo-Balkanic nations?

It's just based on the earliest skeleton finds of Early Slavs. The thing is though, even the early slavs were not a monolithic group. They had hunnic-like people, proto-hungarians, turkics, scythians, volga bulgars. Early Slavs are not Proto-Slavs.

For a more accurate quintessential slavic genome, we need more skeleton finds.

You have to remember that "slavic" is merely a language, and it spread to other indo-european peoples that didn't originally speak slavic, but iranic and balkanic indo-european

Also, R1a isn't necessarily associated with slavs, but merely with the eastern corded-ware (which is why Poles have the highest R1a and not Ukrainians, and Ukrainians have more steppe input)

Italy is cut off from the rest of Europe due to the mountains. What's more surprising is that Spaniards are closer to the rest of Europe genetically than Italians are. Rome was a hell of a melting pot.

Italy is just a word because genetically it doesn't mean anything. Spaniards are closer to the rest of the Europe than Central or Southern Italians, Northern Italians ? Huh. It's not true, and it depends of the regions.

And Italy has always been diverse, it has nothing to do with Rome, probably since the Neolithic and even back in time.
