Portugal not a Mediterranean country?

People here don't tend to identify themselves with seas or oceans. So if you conducted a street interview and asked people if they were mediterranean they would look at you in a funny way. If in typical TA fashion you then asked "Oh yeah? Does that mean you identify with the Irish?" they would also look at you in a funny way.

What is obvious is that there are both influences here. Our national dish is an atlantic fish seasoned in the mediterranean way:

It's true that Portugal geographically isn't part of the Med region. It is an Atlantic nation.

However, I keep reading on the Internet (not here in TheApricity though) that a lot of Portuguese people always defend their 'Atlantic-ness' and that they are not Southern or Mediterranean at all culturally.

I even know a Portuguese guy who believes that Portugal is more similar to Ireland, the UK and Western France than to Italy, Spain and Greece. WTF?!

Portugal is only geographically not Mediterranean, but what about their climate, their genetics and overall lifestyle?
