People here don't tend to identify themselves with seas or oceans. So if you conducted a street interview and asked people if they were mediterranean they would look at you in a funny way. If in typical TA fashion you then asked "Oh yeah? Does that mean you identify with the Irish?" they would also look at you in a funny way.

What is obvious is that there are both influences here. Our national dish is an atlantic fish seasoned in the mediterranean way:

However, I keep reading on the Internet (not here in TheApricity though) that a lot of Portuguese people always defend their 'Atlantic-ness' and that they are not Southern or Mediterranean at all culturally.

I even know a Portuguese guy who believes that Portugal is more similar to Ireland, the UK and Western France than to Italy, Spain and Greece. WTF?!

Portugal is only geographically not Mediterranean, but what about their climate, their genetics and overall lifestyle?
Portugal shares climate with Greece, but what else is there in common? They have way more historic and religious ties with Western France and the British Isles than with Greece. Saying Portugal is closer to those nations than to Spain sounds very bizarre though, he probably just doesn't like Spain.

In my opinion, Portugal is a Southern European Atlantic nation. "Mediterranean" isn't a cultural word since even coastal North Africa is considered Mediterranean, but its not perceived as being culturally close to Southern Europe.

    Portugal is Nordocromagnid.
The Guanche skulls as a whole are unlike those of modern European Mediterraneans, and resemble northern European series most closely, especially those in which a brachycephalic element is present, as in Burgundian and Alemanni series.
divided them into clearly differentiated types, which include a Mediterranean, a Nordic, a "Guanche," and an Alpine. The "Guanche" accounts for 50 per cent of the whole on the four islands of Teneriffe, Gomera, Gran Canaria, and Hierro; the Nordic for 31 per cent, the Mediterranean for 13 per cent, and the Alpine

I never knew Portugal's location could create such strong emotions.
