Asian haplogroups make up 1% of Bulgaria so unlikely. They aren't even really different from their neighbors, just a higher number of E1b folks than Serbia etc.

Those who want to live, let them fight, and those who do not want to fight in this world of eternal struggle do not deserve to live.
Even if this were hard--that is how it is ! Assuredly, however, by far the harder fate is that which strikes the man who thinks he can overcome Nature, but in the last analysis only mocks her. Distress, misfortune, and diseases are her answer.

Of course, you are largely correct.

Serbs have more I1 and I2/I2a, as well as a higher prevalence of Q and N and Bulgarians have more R1b and E1b1b but nothing drastic.

Do you speak Bulgarian? Link above has info about both their genetics and anthropological type. Mainly Iranic with Turan and Finno-Ugric influences according to data. I had read years ago that according to skeleton remains Bulgar warriors ranged from 175 to 197 cm. tall and even if those were picked among the physically stronger ones, it's still significantly higher than what a seriously Mongoloid admixed population would achieve in the medieval period.

Bulgars were a relatively small ruling class over a much larger body of Slavs. They were eventually absorbed into the Slavic corpus with the Bulgarian name surviving. It would not make much sense if Bulgarians were Asiatic today, despite the Turkic origin of the name.
