Those who want to live, let them fight, and those who do not want to fight in this world of eternal struggle do not deserve to live.
Even if this were hard--that is how it is ! Assuredly, however, by far the harder fate is that which strikes the man who thinks he can overcome Nature, but in the last analysis only mocks her. Distress, misfortune, and diseases are her answer.

Interesting, but hard labor is just another form of torture imo. Also why would you give terrorists tools etc? Just asking for trouble. As for the torturers. Soldiers are already psychopaths, we all have a bit of psychopath in us. I don't think harming a terrorist would keep me up at night personally nor would I particularly enjoy it.

Torturing? No, and even Thomas Jefferson was totally against that which he calls it a very barbaric practice even against your enemies, and anyone does this in the US gets to be executed back in the day. Execution? Yes, but in a humane way like pretty much all of executions occur in the US these days; the needle.

Execution obviously, and for much more than terrorism.
Torture is uncivilised but in some cases it's understandable, also depends what kind of torture you're talking about.

No. I mean, he was an American politician, lawyer and even a philosopher of humble origins, thus he didn't serve in the army to be..well, let's say that the soldiers even back then were disposable tools for any government for any nation or kingdom at the time, thus he doesn't adhere the "kill or be killed" philosophy, you know? I mean, his views is a direct contrast to say, Joe Arpaio, who was dubbed as America's toughest sheriff who I think shares similar views as you. He is a very headstrong man both literally(he's very Alpine) and figuratively.
