Default Do you prefer Practical Effects or CGI?

Personally I love practical effects especially in horror movies. I think even movies people consider bad like Congo (I thought it was great as a kid myself and still enjoy rewatching it) were amazing with practical effects.
Those who want to live, let them fight, and those who do not want to fight in this world of eternal struggle do not deserve to live.

Even if this were hard--that is how it is ! Assuredly, however, by far the harder fate is that which strikes the man who thinks he can overcome Nature, but in the last analysis only mocks her. Distress, misfortune, and diseases are her answer.

to add to that CGI can be used with practical effects like in Mad Max Fury Road to enhance the film, but I think any movie made with just CGI like most modern super hero movies just look like shit, hard for me to watch. I see video games with better skins than movies; pretty silly.

    Practical all day.

I wanna feel like I could really touch it in my hands. Even though practical effects can look just as fake as CGI, at least I feel like it is really there. I think one of the successes of The Force Awakens was it's sizable volume of practical effects.

I still say, to this day, that the best CGI I have ever seen was the original Jurrassic Park, I think that they got it right in that one. For comparison, I just watched the new Wonder Woman, I laughed at the opening sequence, which was indecipherable from a video game.

Ultimately I guess I prefer a blended approach, with practical effects wherever possible.

They used some practical effects though too didnt they in Jurassic park? I haven't seen it in a looooooong time. I need to rewatch it. Likewise the textures of practical effects give it life. I hate the textures most in CGI, they are so flat and unrealistic even when they try hard try and break things up. I can't see how CGI has gotten worse rather than better . I have seen no budget youtube videos better than some close to billion dollar movies.

I agree, I think the textures are the problem.

I recommend going back and watching Jurassic Park, I saw it recently and the early scene with the roaming Brachiosaurs is awesome, so well done. And yes that film most def used a blend style of special effects, not as massively reliant on CGI like today's Marvel superhero films for example.
