Different times, different metrics, i guess. I wouldn't say the invention of the computer has more merit than, say, Euclid's Elements, or Plato's Republic. Had the Roman Catholic monks given up in preserving literacy among hordes of iliterate barbarians and the West today would probably be just the western corner of Eurasia. Germanics owe a lot to Greeks and Romans and always considered themselves as the rightful heirs of classical civilization.
